The Area

Cliburn is set in the beautiful Eden Valley 6 miles from Penrith and 7 miles from Appleby-in-Westmorland and is on the edge of the Lake District.

Openair ServiceThe area is well situated for lots of activities like walking, water sports and the great outdoor leisure activities, but close to the M6 for ease of movement to other areas by car or by rail using the Carlisle to Settle or the west coast main lines.

The photograph on the right (c/o Ms R Recktenwald) is of an openair service held on the camp site belonging to Church Warden, Margaret Burne, and shows a distant view of the North Pennines; Cross Fell, the highest mountain (893m / 2930ft) in the Pennine Chain, can be seen just to the right of the big tree.

Also nearby is Cliburn Moss NNR (National Nature Reserve), a basin mire under the watchful eye of English Nature that has public access.

The Village

A small rural village in the Eden Valley with approximately 250 adults of varying ages and about 50 school age children all who travel out of the village to a variety of schools; primary children tend mainly to go to Bolton or Morland Schools, and secondary children to Penrith or Appleby (a School bus service is available to all these).

The village has grown considerably over the years with new houses being built. Most people tend to commute to work as employment in the village is limited.

We have an excellent modern village hall which is used most evenings and often during the day.

We have recently won £58000 Lotto cash to help build an outdoor gym in the village. Work should start shortly on this project.

The villagers in general are friendly and helpful to one another.
