Crosby Old Cross

The Church

The Front of the ChurchThe Church of St Lawrence Crosby Ravensworth stands proudly beside the remains of the old cross, which dates back to around 700AD. It has a fine Early English doorway and nave arcade of the same period. As a result of Victorian 'improvement', it is the largest church in the group and we are proud of it; but it needs a lot of work to be done in repair and refurbishment.

Three years ago, in consultation with the then Archdeacon, the PCC felt then that the best solution would be to 'go redundant', so that, with it being a Grade I listed building, the Churches Conservation Trust might take it over, yet still allow limited use. Dealings with the CCT, although very helpful at first, have been very protracted. Meanwhile a new PCC has put much thought into the matter and has asked the Diocese to reconsider, so all options are still open. We have had to put together a business plan and strategies for the next twenty years for the Archdeacon and this is under consideration. Meanwhile we have been granted a deferment of the redundancy process to enable further investigation, so we look confidently to a brighter future.

The PCC, which has only had a full complement of 11 for two years, is working to bring the school, village and church closer together. Our Harvest Festival with supper and auction of goods was supported by all denominations and all ages, the primary school children taking a leading roll in the service.

Whilst the church was out of action in 2008, services were held in the Village Hall or Methodist Chapel. There is a monthly united service with the Methodists, the villagers supporting events for both denominations. At Christmas the Posada figures travel around homes in the parish.
Our church tradition is relatively 'low' with a minimum of ritual and ceremony. We have Holy Communion by extension alternate months and lay-led services.
