Leith Lyvennet Parishes Away Day 2013

Group Photo

The Benefice Away Day commenced at 8.45 a.m. on Saturday 11th May 2013 when the bus left Morland Village Hall car park. After a 'pick up' at Bolton 26 people set off for Durham.

Movable PewsOn arriving at Durham Cathedral we met up with Lucie Lunn, who is completing her studies towards her ordination on the 30th of June. Lucie gave us an interesting conducted tour of Cranmer Hall and a visit to the ancient church of St Mary the Less, which has been sympathetically adapted for modern use by the ordinands and others whilst keeping the character of the building. Interesting features are the moveable pews and underfloor heating.

St Mary the LessAfter this tour we made our way back to the Cathedral and dispersed for an hour to browse in the shop or go into town. We reconvened for the 12.30 p.m. service in one of the chapels after which we were free to explore - some of us opting to ascend the central tower to admire the view.

Durham CathedralWe all met again at 2.00 p.m. and were escorted to the Priory Room for lunch.

At 3.00 p.m.we met in the Galilee Chapel for the start of our guided tour of the building. Much of the Cathedral's history was explained here as the rehearsal for an evening concert was going on in the main building.

The Galilee Chapel itself had many interesting features including wall paintings, tombs and carvings.

In the main building we proceeded towards the East End passing the tombs of the Percy family.

Durham Cathedral NaveWe viewed the first pointed arches in England, the altars and carvings behind the high altar and finally visiting the tomb of St Cuthbert.

After a very interesting tour lasting 1 hour and 20 minutes, we returned to the bus for our journey home.
